Make action inevitable

Find the one commitment that makes doing the work the only option left.

A project that “will happen eventually” never does, no matter how much willpower you throw at it. Willpower isn’t the lever. The lever is a single commitment that makes not-doing-it impossible: a deadline someone else is waiting on, a deposit someone already paid.

For that to actually work, backing out has to cost more than following through:

  • Someone else has to be watching. A deadline only you know about is a preference with a date attached. It works only when another party has skin in it, and backing out means disappointing or repaying them.
  • Reneging has to be more expensive than doing the work. A deposit only forces action if losing it, or refunding it, genuinely hurts. If walking away is cheap, the commitment is decorative.
  • It has to be hard to quietly undo. If you can renegotiate the deadline or refund the deposit without friction, it was never a leverage point, it was a suggestion.

Push on a hundred small habits and most of them slide back the moment you look away. Push on the one leverage point and the rest of the behavior falls in line, because it has to.

Stop looking for motivation. Find the leverage point that leaves nothing else standing.
